What happens after Trump (almost certainly) loses the election? How does the US begin to heal its divides? How do the Republicans bounce back from a (likely) thrashing?

Roifield Brown, host of the MidAtlantic podcast, joins Erik to talk about changes in American attitudes and demographics, as well as the ongoing challenges the US will face as confidence in our democratic institutions sits at a historic low.

As the United States approaches its election, Joe Biden opens up a double-digit national lead. If it holds, it will be the biggest electoral landslide since Reagan smacked down Mondale in 1984. Trump is likely to contest the results regardless.

We’re assuming Biden will prevail. What happens afterwards? Trump has violated many norms in American democracy. Self-proclaimed militias stand ready to potentially interfere, and the Michigan governor kidnapping plot shows that at least some of them are willing to act. The United States stands so divided that political violence seems likely. As much as civil war seems farfetched, it is now part of our national conversation.

How will the Republican party react to a big national defeat? Will they do some soul-searching and cast a wider net? Long-term demographic shifts put them in a tricky position: as white Americans make up a shrinking portion of the population, will the Republicans need to pivot to cast a wider net? How will they appeal to other demographic groups? …or will they even need to?

In this episode, Roifield and Erik spend a lot of time discussing the recent history of the United States, and the possible futures that could come about after the election in November.
